Lark's head

Name:

Englsh speaker mostly refer to this knot as  a Lark’s head, however it is also known as the Cow hitch or lanyard hitch.

In Japanese the knot is called Hibarimusubi 雲雀結び .
The name "hibari" (雲雀) refers to the lark, a bird often associated with grace and simplicity in Japanese culture.

Type:

This is a type of knot, but is also classified as a friction hitch. It is used in some modern shibari patterns, but is more commonly found in fusion ties.

Use:

This knot is used to tie a rope to an object, in Shibari the object is another rope which makes this a 'friction hitch'.  While it does serve a clear practical purpose it has been viewed in Shibari as a decorative knot and so has not been used much in older rope patterns with some people seeing it more as a 'fusion knot'.

The finished knot looks the same as the girth hitch which is used to join two ropes together  - the difference between the two is that a lark's head is tied when one end of the rope is already secured to something.
