Half-moon, Half moon friction. The Japanese name Hakadome (箱留め) has sometimes been applied to this friction, but it should be noted that Hakadome also refers to a specific way of tying boxes/gifts and to fasteners used to close boxes generally.

Securing two wraps, or a wrap and a column that create an + shape, typically used to secure the second wrap of a gote.

How To Tie A Half-moon
1. Bring the rope under the stem



2. Reverse the tension bringing the rope back in the opposite direction over the stem.

3. Bring the rope under the bottom wraps.



4. Bring the rope over the stem and under the wraps on the opposite side.



6. Bring the rope over the stem again.

7. Finally take the rope back under the stem.
